I couldn’t resist any longer; last night I settled in with Vampirates: Blood Captain. Soon it will be finished – and I’ll be at a loss because who knows when the next book in the series will be released – and I’ll post a review here. {It’s one of my Fall into Reading challenge selections – I tend to write “actual” reviews for those books.} So far, though, as with the others I’m loving it. Totally absorbed in the story. Having a ridiculously hard time putting it down.
Let’s see. My husband and I went to BJ’s the other day and I started doing hand signals to let him know I’d be in the book section. I have absolutely no idea as to why I was doing that, but he just grinned and shook his head, watching as I wandered over and immediately started picking up hardcovers. He was just as content to get lost in the large screen plasma t.v.’s. In any event, I ended up leaving with two books: Interred with Their Bones {Jennifer Lee Carrell} and Foundling {D.M. Cornish}. Carrell’s novel sounds great and the pages I read in the store immediately caught my interest. Foundling,
though, was another matter. I had read good things about it and the plot appealed to me, but, and I know this is awful, the cover bothered me – and because of that I kept pushing the book aside. Why? That boy’s pinched up face just gets to me. Yeah, yeah, it’s silly, but there you have it. And I should be forgiven since I’ve pushed my cover dislike aside and went so far as to purchase it. {Granted, at a great discount, but still.} Of course there is now the matter of when they’ll actually get read, but once the books are in the collection, they’re there for whenever.
I was also browsing Amazon earlier, and though nothing was purchased, I did take some time to read a thread on a J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood page. It was about the message boards on the author’s site. Fans of the series were saying, basically, how awful it was on those boards, and how they were censored constantly in very antagonistic ways. I’m not sure whether such action on the part of the board’s moderators is condoned by the author or not, but it’s sad to hear, and, to be honest, diminished just a touch of my respect for the series. That may sound awful, to let my view of the books be dimmed, but hearing of people being treated unfairly and stifled when all they aim for is an honest, calm discussion of their opinions isn’t something I can set aside. When I used to frequent Laurell K Hamilton’s boards, there were, at times, similar issues. Not so much with the moderators, but with other fans. There were personal attacks, opinions cut down, etc. Everyone had their favorite character(s) and if you said one wrong word about he/she, you would find yourself on the receiving end of a rather nasty haranguing. So I stopped going there. The Black Dagger Brotherhood boards were intimidating simply because of the severity of the rules. I completely understand having to have rules in place, but…So I didn’t even scrape the surface of that Amazon thread, but it certainly made me reconsider any thoughts I had of joining those boards.
Is anyone else looking forward to tonight’s episode of Bones?? Dissolve the partnership? What?! I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen!!
