Evernight ~ Claudia Gray

…A Young Adult Challenge Selection

“Bianca wants to escape.

She’s been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn’t fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He’s not the “Evernight type” either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

“I couldn’t stand it if they took it out on you,” he tells Bianca, “and eventually they would.”

But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can’t be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she’s ever believed.”

In less then a day I began and finished Evernight. It took me triple that time, at least, to finish the last book I read. It’s not to say one was better than the other, but more that this one grabbed me, that it wouldn’t let go until it was done. And so, yes, I enjoyed it a lot, and for the most part have nothing bad to say about the book. Except, that is, for one thing. That’s where I’ll start.

There’s a twist in Evernight. If you read other reviews you’ll see it mentioned for sure. I’m not going to say what it is because that would be a huge spoiler, but my problem lies in that when the twist was introduced it suddenly felt like I was reading another story, a separate book entirely from the one I began. I was going with the flow and then was harshly thrust into the position of having to accept a whole different scenario. The disjointed nature of the twist, however, wasn’t enough to shift my opinion of the book, and so I’ll leave it at that.

It was apparent early on that Claudia Gray got teenagers, especially ones who had been like me: quiet, painfully shy, unsure of their place. This quality endeared me to her main character, Bianca, from the start.

There are people who enjoy meeting strangers, who can strike up conversations and make friends quickly, but I’d never been one of those people. Anything but.

It’s funny – when people call you “shy,” they usually smile. Like it’s cute, some funny little habit you’ll grow out of when you’re older, like the gaps in your grin when your baby teeth fall out. If they knew how it felt – really being shy, not just unsure at first – they wouldn’t smile. Not if they knew how the feeling knots up your stomach or makes your palms sweat or robs you of the ability to say anything that makes sense. It’s not cute at all.

The other characters were interesting, as well, and I think this first book scratched the surface on a few of them. {I’d love to see more of Balthazar.} And the romantic interest, Lucas, I enjoyed him, too. There was nice chemistry between Lucas and Bianca, and you can even forgive how quickly things seemed to progress between them. In fact, you even kind of cheer them on. While I hesitate to include this snippet from the Romantic Times Bookclub review, I have to because it draws an interesting and pretty accurate comparison that gives a better sense of the relationship in the book: “Teenage love, ancient hatred and a Romeo and Juliet-style feud fuel the fires in this compelling first-person drama.”

What more could you ask for, right?

The ending isn’t an ending at all and a quick stop at Claudia Gray’s website reveals four books planned in this series. I’ll most definitely be reading Stargazer; in fact, I really would like it to come out a lot sooner then March ’09.

I might like this but since I haven’t read the Twilight series, and since the first one was just chosen as July’s group read for my online reading group, I’m going to have to hold out on these :(

I agree with the part of your review when you mentiioned how when you got to the twist you felt like you were reading a different story but it didn’t take away from your liking of the book. At first I thought maybe it was all a dream or nightmare or something.
Overall, the twist made me love the book even more. I can’t wait for the next book.

i deeply agree, i loved the way claudia gray plotted the story. and what caught my interest and couldn’t bring me to a hault was the TURNING POINT in the sory, i heart seriously skipped a beat if anyone wants to know the turning point is in page 144..anyway , nevertheless ………..i would love to see more more of balthazar , he catches most of my interest not more than lucas…but balthazar kept me pondering…made me dizzy.. i mean how much he feels for bianca.. THIS BOOK IS COMPLETELY COMPELLING TO OTHERS WHO HAS YET TO PICK UP EVERNIGHT AND START READING IT…. almost remind me of the twilight series…BUT NOTHING CAN BEAT “TWILIGHT”. BUT I CANT WAIT TO READ MORE. really mad i have to wait till next year.hhmph

The overall style of the book was wonderful and it had characters that I believe anyone between the ages of 12-18 could easily relate to. But it seems as if most writing for teens consists of vampires and I completly get the “hottness” of Twilight even though i refuse to read the book I think “Evernight” and Gray hit dead on with the labeling them as “snobs” or “outcasts” But i feel as if I have read the same plotline somewhere else or seen it in a movie I guess I’ll have to read on and see What else Gray has in store for her furture books

Ladytink ~ But when you do finally get around to them, most of the books in the series might already be out, so you can just devour them all at one time. There’s a plus: No waiting! :)

Koree ~ I can’t wait either! I keep checking her website to see if she even has an excerpt posted yet.

faustine ~ Balthazar was probably my favorite character. Gray has said that he’ll definitely have a role to play in future novels, and I’m looking forward to how that might play out.

NotToBe ~ I am a big fan of Twilight (and vampire literature in general,) and I’d have to say that Gray definitely created a really nice atmosphere in Evernight. I think this series will continue to develop and grow, you know?

Amy ~ Nope, this is the first one. Stargazer is up next.

Some may compare it, but I wouldn’t. It doesn’t have the same feel, doesn’t share the same atmosphere, but I think because of the vampire/Romeo and Juliet type plot comparisons are indeed being drawn.

    This book was wonderful!

But I quite agree with the first reviewer. When the plot molded into something entirely different than I’d first guessed I closed the book for a good five minutes and put on my “What?!” face.

Eventually I continued to read it. (and continued to enjoy it) but I’d thought that I’d missed a paragraph somewhere along that explained her… character (?) a bit more.

    It was amazing thoughhhhh.
    So:
    READ IT!!!
    READ IT!!!
    READ IT!!!

    That’s all. ;)

omg…this was such an amazing book. I am normally pretty good at predicting endings of books, and I was also extremely shocked at the twist. Thinking about it, I probably love this book even more, because I COULDN’T predict it, books are boring if after 20 pages you already know how it ends and how the storyline will progress basicially. In my mind there were two twists, the one everyone has been talking about, and the one near the end. There were a bunch of hints for both I saw when I re-read it (it is that good), and I felt really stupid for not realizing at least the first twist earlier in the book.
I’m sooooooo excited for Stargazer!!! I think I’m going to get it at midnight, then get “sick” the next day and stay home from school. :D
I recommend this book, it is one of the best books I have read in a while (and I read a lot), and I feel like this story will stay with me for a really long time. A must-read, and 10.

ok, so when i first got this book i kind of mostly bought it becuase the arthur had the same first name as myself. and it took me a while to get past the 5th page, but after that i was addicted, i couldn’t leave it behind, only took me a few days to read it inbetween classes.
in most vampire stories, the boy is this big strong vampire and the girl is this helpless mortal. with this story they give you a twist no one would have expected. i lloved it. but became sad near the end of the story when the next twist took its hit.
over all i loved this book. but i don’t regreat that it took me so long to read it.cuase now i have to wait less time as apose to those who read it in the summer for the next book.
P.S balthazar was my favorite man in the story, then lucus, and then vic. who couldn’t love that big idiot!?

Yeah, not Robert Pattinson, PLEASE! Someone else who could make Lucas’ character exciting like Max Theriot or Austin Butler. I’m supporting Evernight characters, not Twilight characters.

I read Evernight over the summer. I must say, I could barely breathe! I did ry too. I’m not going to ruin it but the book has it’s sad moments. I can’t wait to read Stargazer which, I’ll probably get someone to buy it for me for Christmas!! I think Claudia Gray is a very talented author. I read twilight and I love both these books. I am a vampire ADDICT so it all works out! I am a complete fan of this series. I couldn’t put it down even for one minutes. I was reading it from the second I woke up to the second I went to sleep. I love how at first she makes you think Lucas is the vampire but in the end we find out Bianca is and their secrets are blown. Bianca is a vampire, and Lucas is her enemy, a vampire killer. I think a quote from the famous Romeo and Juliet applies well here. Don’t know which one I’m speaking of….. “My only love, sprung from my only hate. Too early seen unknown and known too late. Prodigious birth of love is it to me, that I must love a loathed enemy.” So… if you love vampire romances for young adults, kick back, relaz, ad enjoy!!

i just read this book a week ago and now i am addicted to it. its like this centuries Romeo and Juliet. when i first started reading i though Lucas was the vampire and Bianca the human but i was wrong but that only made it better. iv always been in to the hole vampire world and iv read the hold twilight saga books alot and Evernight reminds me of it a little bit but i like this book its a love that can never be between a vampire and a vampire hunter as if it couldn’t get any more difficult

I love this book! I started reading it yesterday, I’m half way through now(I’m taking my time XD).
I love Grays writing style and her story.
When it came to the turning point, I had to re-read it. I was like, “Wait.. Did she just..”
It dissapointed me a little, that she didn’t even hint at it at ALL throughout the first 100 pages or so. It surprised me a little, but I got used to it, and no I love it even more.!
