Daniel Waters’ Generation Dead was one of my favorite books of 2008, so you can probably imagine how thrilled I was to find out that he was going to be signing in a bookstore very close to home last night. My husband had to work so I towed my parents along and we arrived promptly at 6, an hour before the reading. I guess you could say I was excited.
I kind of had him to myself for a little bit before the event began (which, I won’t lie, was wonderful, and he’s such a nice guy.) Instead of doing a reading, he told us how Generation Dead came about, how he originally thought GD was going to be a trilogy but now there’s a real good shot he won’t stop there (woot!,) and he answered several questions that ranged from why he thought the current zombie/undead trend was so popular to how his online presence has impacted readers. It was a really wonderful event and I am so glad I got to go.
I didn’t really ask any questions, but I did tell him that I wasn’t prepared for how emotionally impactful the story was, and that, in GD, where he chose to have the zombie kids pause in their speech was heartbreaking. He really surprised me when he said that not many people commented on that. It was one of my favorite things! He also said he’d be curious to hear how I responded to a new element that plays out in Kiss of Life. Well, I read the first two pages in the car and when I got home I immediately emailed him to tell him that my heart didn’t just break, it completely stopped. Amazing, wrenching stuff. Which is one of the reasons why you should read these books. And that leads me to…
A giveaway! I have a signed copy of Generation Dead that I would love to send to a new home. If you would like a shot at it, leave a comment on this post by June 12th.
Right now I can only send to US addresses. And while not necessary to be entered in the drawing, I would appreciate it if you could pass news of this giveaway along on your own blog – I love these books so much, I really want as many people to hear about them as possible.

I’d love a chance to win.
I would love love to be included. This is one of the top books on my wishlist.

It sounds like a great book! And even if I don’t win, I’m so glad you had such a moving experience with the book!
I read this book & it broke my heart on so many levels. In a few short weeks I will be 30 and I could relate to many of these things the teens in the book were facing with death and having it right in your face.
I’ve been curious about this book but haven’t heard a lot about it until I read your review. I’m glad to know that not only is it good but it has a good message too. I would love the chance to read this one, so please count me in. :0)
