Crushes – The Classic

Since it’s February and love is in the air, let’s talk crushes. And by crushes I mean the gentlemen in film that are the cause of that worn down rewind button on your remote. I’m going to do a set of crushes – one post a week throughout the month.  And I’m going to begin with The Classic: Gregory Peck.

A serious man who portrayed serious characters, Gregory Peck still managed to make my heart beat a little faster. To blame? Well, you can start with that voice. And then you can move on to those dark eyes.

In a comment on my ‘reading the classics‘ post, Danielle made my day by saying Gregory Peck = yum! I couldn’t agree more. And while others swoon over Cary Grant, I say well that’s fine, more Gregory for me.

I went on to ask Danielle if she’d seen one of his earlier films, The Keys of the Kingdom, because he was young and beautiful, and he played a character that was sweetly determined and devoted to his faith and the people in his care. For me, Peck is one of the unforgettables. Whether playing a lawyer, a man in a gray flannel suit, or an amnesiac, Peck gets me every time.

My next Crushes post will be on The Obvious (bet you can guess who’ll make an appearance on that list. Actually, I bet you can name two.) If you have any classic crushes, name drop in the comments!

Ahh Gregory Peck great choice although I must admit I haven’t seen him in a love interest role. As I’ve only seen To Kill a Mockingbird and The Boys From Brazil. The latter is a particularly great film.

The name that first came to mind when I thought of Classic crushes was Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. I adore Gone With The Wind. My Nan and me used to wait till my Grandad and Dad had gone out and have a long afternoon watching it together, with tea and biscuits :-)

Hey! I feel like a bit of a rock star – lol!

I’ve had such a crush on Gregory Peck ever since I first saw him in ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’. I was only about 14 when I saw that movie for the first time, and I remember we had to watch it for school and lots of my friends commented that they wished Atticus was their father – meanwhile I wished Gregory Peck was my boyfriend. I have not seen his earlier work, I’ve only seen his hits like ‘Roman Holiday’ and ‘The Bravados’. But judging from that picture I will have to see his earlier work…

I do have other classic crushes. The usual ones like Marlon Brando and James Dean. I also have a serious soft spot for Montgomery Clift, circa ‘Red River’. He made that cowboy hat look damn good.

jessica – I can’t believe I’m about to admit this, but…I have never seen Gone with the Wind all the way through. Bits and pieces and mostly when it was on t.v. That’s so awesome that you had that experience with it!

    Becky – Definitely a classic!

Danielle – lol! I was exactly like you! Some of his earlier films – like Keys – were so very, very good. He also looked fantastic in Hitchcock’s Spellbound (oh goodness!) I almost feel bad objectifying such a serious actor. Almost. :) (And Brando? The Wild One. Yeah.)

    Angie – I know, right? :)

I recently started watching all Gregory Peck’s movies beginning with “The Keys of Kingdome”. Oh my God, it’s a feast to watch him! He was the most gorgeous creation by God, especially when he was young. With that gentleness and tenderness, he was the most romantic screen figure. Who wouldn’t want to be in his arms? Cary Grant was no comparison.
I highly recommend “The Keys of the Kingdom”, “Spellbound” (talking about beautiful people!), “Captain Haratio Hornblower”, “Captain Newman”, etc.
I really want to watch “A conversation with Gregory Peck”, “Potrait”, and some of his movies/TV that are not available at the public libraries or DVD rentals. Please let me know if anyone knows how to have access to them.
    Grerogy Peck = delicious!

Lovely post… though it’s a bit tough to read the whole thing with THAT picture of Peck with his gorgeous dark eyes [sigh] I’ve just become well, spellbound by his beauty since I saw Spellbound a few weeks ago and now I’ve been having a Peck-a-thon. I just can’t get enough of him. And boy have I found a gold mine since he’s starred in over 50 films in his day.

Look-wise he couldn’t be more perfect… tall, lean, chiseled, thick dark hair, melancholy eyes… then you hear his voice and you just shake your head, HOW IN THE WORLD is someone THAT good looking also blessed with such a VOICE?! That deep, powerful voice that caress your ear as your eyes marvel at the alluring mouth it came from. But his persona captivated me as well, he seemed like a man of integrity based on everything I’ve read about him, perhaps that’s why he could portray someone like Atticus Finch so well.

Anyway, thanks for this post… I think he’ll be my crush for a long, long time :D
