This isn’t going to be a review. More like a set of reactions. Or even just a few rambling thoughts. And I should probably kick it off by admitting that I tried this series out once before with no luck. That just goes to show how the wrong mood can effect your reading experience. Because when I tried Magic Bites again just a few short days ago? I didn’t look back, and when I was done I moved right to Magic Burns, then Magic Strikes. One after the other. And if I could have gotten my hands on Magic Bleeds I would have consumed that right away, too.
So what prompted me to even try this series again? Well, as usual, Angie had a lot to do with it. But a co-worker also recently read it; the way she talked about Magic Bites got my mind working, thinking a second chance was in order. And I wanted to “meet” Curran.
It looks like I owe Angie and my co-worker a big, fat thank you.
I’ve made no bones about the fact that I read first and foremost for character. But with this series, it wasn’t a single character, or even a few, that I found so satisfying. Rather, it was the dynamics between the characters. For instance, Kate thinks she doesn’t want or need friends. Training, instinct, her entire history demands that she slam on the brakes before anyone gets close. But when she finds herself being drawn into a tight circle of people who’d do anything for her, she accepts it even as she acknowledges that she shouldn’t. I liked Kate even more for the choices she made regarding those people, for the relationships she forged in blood and sweat, the friendships that are mutually bound by worry and fleeting flashes of happiness. It helped, too, that the secondary characters are wonderful, fully realized individuals who enhance varying aspects of the books in their own way. Put simply, I love how rich the characters are, but even more I love how they interact, their barbs, their care, all of it.
As for Curran…All I’ll say is that he is everything I expected him to be and more still.
Moving on. The pacing of each book was fantastic; the storyline warranted a fast, keep-reading pace, and all three delivered. Each plot felt true to the characters and world. And the world-building was really, wonderfully solid. I loved how magic and tech were woven together, neither completely reliable, neither entirely predicatable. That single aspect really set the series apart for me.
While I loved all three books, I have to say that Magic Strikes got under my skin the most, owing, probably, to how taut the development of a few key relationships was. (Notably, Kate and Curran, but there were a few others, as well.) To say that I wanted, needed, more right that minute after finishing would not be an understatement. And I’m thinking I did myself some serious mischief by reading the excerpt for Magic Bleeds because, good grief, even the short wait that I have till it’s release is tormenting now that I know what I know.
I’m so glad that I came back to this series! And if you haven’t read them yet, what are you waiting for? Go forth, get Magic Bites (just make sure you have the rest of them handy when you do. Seriously.)

Okay, I just very recently read the first 3 books in this series, and it was the second time I’d tried it, too. The first time I just wasn’t getting into the characters or the world. But then I tried Andrew’s other, newer series, On the Edge, and liked that a lot. I therefore thought this series was probably worth another try. So glad I did! I’m a total convert. I think each book is getting better as the series goes on, and I’m very much looking forward to the new one. And reading that teaser chapter has made me a little crazy, right there with you.
I too loved the character interactions in the story, and how Kate is learning and changing from the friendships she’s made. This is a very good series, and I’m glad I found it.

Oh Kate and Curran! Everything you say about their relationship is true. I love that Curran is slowly inching his way into Kate’s life and frankly I love all their snarky exchanges. So much fun. And YES! I simply cannot wait until the 25th for Magic Bleeds. I think there are some seriously high expectations riding on this book and I’m pretty sure the Andrews will deliver. [crosses fingers]
I am delighted you loved them, Chelle! Seriously. It’s a knock-down punch of a series and I cannot wait for MAGIC BLEEDS. Good grief is right!
Glad Curran lived up to all the hype. The Beast Lord rules.
I actually couldn’t stand Kate or the first book for about the first three chapters in book 1. Then – wham! Love. Love love love. And it’s been so ever since.
Glad U like! I can’t wait to read everyone’s reactions to Magic Bleeds.
” I tried this series out once before with no luck. That just goes to show how the wrong mood can effect your reading experience.”
ME TOO! Oh wow. What a coincidence. I tried reading ‘Magic Bites’ but I didn’t get even half-way through it. I don’t know what put me off. Possibly that it was recommended to me because I love the ‘Mercy Thompson’ series so much, and I couldn’t see a connection. Then everyone started ranting and raving about ‘Magic Strikes’, so I went back, re-read and fell in love!
Curran = whoo boy!
Love this series. Kate Daniels is one of my all-time favorite heroines. This story has been a real journey for her and its been fascinating to watch her grow and her armor come down. I want ‘Magic Bleeds’ *so* bad!
I’m right with you on the misery of waiting! I read all three books in March of last year, and the fast pacing and compelling relationships hooked me instantly.
Welcome to the club!
I’ve been wanting to read this series for the longest time! I haven’t been able to find it around here so I might have to order it online.
Kate won me over in the very first chapter when she bet her beer bottle that an urgent report would be on television, and the bottle lost.
Love these books.
P.S. – You have *got* to check out new YA novel ‘Beautiful Malice’ by Rebecca James. I just read and reviewed it, and I predict it will be the YA novel du jour for 2010. It’s out in Australia now, but is has a July release for UK and USA.
Jill – I read On the Edge, too, and really enjoyed it. And, like you, that played into my decision to give this series another go. Now there’s no looking back!
Michelle – Crosses fingers, toes, you name it!
Angie – He so does. And I want more.
KMont – I’m so glad I wasn’t alone in that! That first book really evened out for me after the second or third chapter, too, but after that I was all in. Now. To wait for Magic Bleeds.
Danielle – I had no clue so many others had a similar reaction to mine! Glad I wasn’t alone in that. Also glad we all went back and ended up enjoying it so much. Now we can all discuss.
Tiger – I don’t even have as long to wait, and it’s still too long! (Almost there.)
Christina – And what an awesome club!
Chachic – Ooo! If you do, let us know what you think.
Kate – Ditto! Love these books.
Danielle – Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll definitely have to check it out!
I must read this series having heard so much about from Angie and now you! I’ve been hankering after some good urban fantasy. I read a lot for character as well because what good is a story without a strong protagonist? It’s summer now, so lots of free time for reading. I’ll have to hit the library up tomorrow.
It is always amazing to me when I read of someone nearly giving up on this series. I remember reading somewhere else that Kate came off as arrogant or too tough. Maybe she can be read that way, but I think she lives in a put up or shut up kind of world. You can’t hem and haw when dealing with people and creatures who’d gut you for looking at them wrong.
I bought the first in the series on a whim and thought the Gods were smiling down on me that day because I loved it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the scene where she goes to The Pack compound—love it!
Kate is one of those rare characters whom I accept warts and all. She is a badass, but she is totally vulnerable as well. I love her shaky courage in those moments when she acknowledges that the situation she finds herself might end with her getting her ass handed to her or maybe even death. She’s a loyal and caring friend even though she knows what this could mean for her survival.
I love Kate Daniels like a fat kid loves cake!
I am truly about to come undone waiting on Magic Bleeds.
