This isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned a work related reading round table I’m an active member of – nor will it be the last – but it is, perhaps, the first time that the books I’ve been reading to take part in the discussion will spill over onto this blog in a big way. The reason being: Our December/January assignment revolves around graphic novels, which are addictive, quick reads that appeal to my increasingly often need to be distracted by ooo-look-at-the-pretty (or gritty) visuals. If you were to peek at my library reserve list, you’d see that I’ve got the ball in a chokehold and have run with it. Which isn’t a bad idea, actually. To the list!
- Captain America. Vol. 1, Winter Soldier
- Fables. 12, The Dark Ages
- Superman : Earth One
- Captain America : Man Out of Time
- Iron Man Noir
- Ultimate Iron Man. Vol. 1
- The Last Dragon
- A Flight of Angels
- Captain Swing, Vol 1
- Morning Glories, Vol 1
- The Avengers, Vol 1 (Marvel Masterworks)
An abbreviated list, then, and one that betrays a few of my current hardcore interests. (In case you you haven’t seen my Tumblr blog recently, that would be Captain America and Iron Man.)
I’m working my way through the following now:
- The Losers, Book 1
- Anya’s Ghost
- Pride of Baghdad
- American Vampire, Vol 1
- Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life
As for what I’ve read recently: Expect a review of Lee Bermejo’s Batman: Noel soonish, and below you’ll see one of the reasons why I think I’m going to love reading Avengers stuff (a panel from Brian Michael Bendis’ The Avengers, Vol 1). Heh.
If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them! I’m open to anything (superhero, literature-gone-graphic, you name it).

If you haven’t read them I would recommend The Plain Janes and its follow up, Janes in Love. Also the Blue Monday graphic novels are great fun in spite of their juvenile humor. I also really liked Super Spy by Matt Kindt.
I’ve read The Plain Janes, but didn’t realize there was a sequel; thanks for the heads-up! As I’ve not heard of the other two, I’ll definitely have to check them out.
I’ve only read a couple of graphic novels but I loved Stardust by Neil Gaiman with illustrations by Charles Vess. And if I had a lot of money to spare, I would buy Gaiman’s Sandman graphic novels.
Couldn’t agree more, the illustrated Stardust is gorgeous. And it is the full text that can be found in the non-illustrated novel. Wonderful book to own.
