This cover. It does things to me. Why? Do you see that glorious building? That’s why. And the way the title takes its shape according to the lines and angles of the roof? That’s why, too. The fog rising off the water? The lights burning in the windows? The desaturated sky? Why, why, and why. When I saw it yesterday my immediate reaction was WANT.
I’ve never read Prose before, but this book, based on the cover and the summary (below), is a must have. Hopefully it will live up to the potential of both.
“Jack is babysitting for the summer on an isolated island with no Wi-Fi, no cell service, and no one else around but a housekeeper and two very peculiar children. He immediately senses something sinister-and it’s not just the creepy black house he’s living in. Soon he is feeling terribly isolated and alone, but then he discovers there are others. The problem is, he’s the only who can see them. As secrets are revealed and darker truths surface, Jack desperately struggles to maintain a grip on reality. He knows what he sees, and he isn’t crazy…Or is he?
Where does reality end and insanity begin? The Turn of the Screw reinvented for modern-day teens, by National Book Award finalist Francine Prose”
The Turning is due out on September 25th.

Oh my! I have never read Prose either before, but this cover! This cover! And the summary! Thank you for featuring this, I sense this will be very high on my “books to get” list!
The person responsible for this cover certainly knew what she/he was doing!
That cover is simply AWESOME, Chelle! It’s beautiful. I have read and enjoyed Prose before but if I hadn’t I’d definitely pick this up because of the cover. I’ve read her non-fiction book, Reading Like a Writer which is very inspiring, I really recommend it. I haven’t read her fiction before. I don’t generally go for horror, but since it’s Prose I feel I’d be in safe hands.
I’ll have to get down my copy of The Turn of the Screw first though I think!
Isn’t it?!
I’ll have to check out her non-fiction book. The topic appeals to me; added to your recommendation, I’ll definitely have to track a copy down. And I hate to admit this, but I haven’t read – at least that I can remember – The Turn of the Screw. I just looked at getting it myself for the same purpose.
I loved The Turn of the Screw it was super creepy! Would love to read a modern interpretation of it.
That’s it. I’m going to have to track down a copy. (It likely won’t get read before The Turning comes out, but…)
